Changing Fonts and Colours

Choose your browser from the list below:

Internet Explorer

To change the text size:
  1. Select View from the main menu
  2. Select Text Size
  3. Pick one of the 5 sizes
To change the style of the text:
  1. Select Tools from the dropdown menu then select Internet Options
  2. Select General then select Fonts
  3. Select a font, size and style and click OK
  4. Select Accessibility
  5. Select Ignore font styles to lock in your changes
To change colours and backgrounds:
  1. Whilst in General click on the colours button
  2. De-select Use Windows colour  in the checkbox
  3. Click on Text to open a colour dialog box
  4. Select your colour and click OK

  5. Click on Background to adjust the background colour.
  6. Click OK to return to General
  7. Select Accessibility and then Ignore colours specified by web pages to activate your changes

To change link colours:
  1. Select colours
  2. Select Visited or Unvisited to change the colours of the links
  3. Select the colours you want
  4. Tick the Use hover colour checkbox and select the colour you need for highlighting
  5. Click OK to return to General and click OK again to start browsing

Firefox

To change the text size:
  1. Open View menu
  2. Select Text Size
  3. Select from Increase, Decrease or Normal

To change the style and colours:
  1. Open Tools and select Options
  2. Select Content. In the bottom section find Fonts & colours
  3. Select a font, size, colour, background and links
  4. Select colours - you can change the text colour, the background colour and links. Don't forget to de-select the box allowing pages to select their own colours.
  5. Click OK to activate your changes

Netscape Navigator

Netscape Navigator lets you define the size, style and colour of the fonts. You can also change the colour of the background and links (visited and not visited) on the page.

To change the text size:
  1. Open View menu
  2. Select Increase Font or Decrease Font
  3. or use Keyboard Commands: ctrl ] (increase) ctrl [ (decrease)

To change the style and colours:
  1. Open Edit menu and select Preferences
  2. From the category list select Fonts
  3. Select a desired font style and size for both variable-width and fixed-width fonts
  4. Select Use my default fonts... option

  5. Select colours
  6. Select colours for fonts, background, and links
  7. De-select Use Windows colours
  8. Select Always use my colours

AOL

To change the style and colours:
  1. Open My AOL and select Preferences
  2. Click on the WWW icon and select Advanced Settings
  3. From the dialog box, select Browser Display
  4. This should open the Internet Explorer Internet options dialog box
  5. Follow the directions above for Internet Explorer users unless you are using a Mac in which case you will need to use the Netscape instructions immediately above.

Opera

Opera allows you to change many options. Text type, size, and colour in addition to background colour and links can be defined by the user.

  1. Open File menu and select Preferences
  2. Select Document from the list of categories
  3. In User fonts and colours set the Font size by selecting a text style
  4. Select font style and size
  5. Set Background colour by placing cursor in the active field or by selecting the . . . button and choosing a colour from the palette
  6. Under Presentation Modes heading are two columns of checkboxes
  7. Untick any boxes marked in the "Document" column on these lines:
    • Document fonts and colours
    • User fonts and colours
    • User links
  8. Tick the same boxes in the User column
  9. Select Link Presentation
  10. In the dialog box, select presentation colours and elements for Not Visited and Visited links categories
  11. In Preferences select Apply to activate changes
